簡單省錢自製洗碗機粉 + 光潔潤乾劑 | Best DIY Dishwasher Powder & Rinse Aid (NOT Vinegar!!)
I am super excited to share this combo!!!!! I’ve tested my dishwasher powder and rinse aid separately with store bought options, as well as using them both together (I used Finish Classic Dishwasher Powder and Rinse Aid). Either way, they yield clean sparkling results, so you can whip up one or the other or both to suit your needs.
My dishwasher powder is nothing magical but has an added oomph to give it extra cleaning strength - sodium percarbonate. I find it works better than borax, which are in many DIY recipes. It is my favorite ingredient for household cleaning, even better than baking soda. I’ve used it to soak coffee stain in silicone measuring cup and it works like a breeze. I also add it to my laundry and it works like OxiClean (1~2 tablespoon of my Sal Suds copy cat DIY Biodegradable All-in-One Cleaner + a scoop of sodium percarbonate per load). I usually order a 25kg commercial package which costs less than US$50 in Taiwan, delivery included, and it lasts me well over a year for my cleaning needs.
Baking soda, washing soda and salt are pretty standard ingredients in homemade dishwasher powder. Mix or shake well and that’s it. To use, I follow my dishwasher instructions - approximately 1~2 tablespoon per load. I’ve omitted citric acid as it interacts with sodium percarbonate and can clump. However, if you want to make dishwasher pods, you can try to add ½ cup of citric acid and it may set into pods in molds. I simply find that too time-consuming.
For my rinse aid, I’ve taken reference from this post Blue Shift: Why Dishwasher Rinse Aid Makes Dishes Cleaner and Drier, which still has a complicated list of ingredients. I decided to focus on the alcohol ethoxylate, the nonionic surfactant. For us ignorant non-experts, I basically looked for a surfactant that’s not bubbly. I found Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylate 7 mole EO from my local chemical ingredient store. I am not sure how accurate the product name is in English, since Taiwanese local providers are usually not very detail oriented. I’ve jolted down the CAS number of this ingredient below. Hopefully it can be a reference so you can try this recipe wherever you are. If you can’t find this particular ingredient, but can opt for other alcohol ethoxylate, it’s definitely worth a try. I got mine down on the second attempt and haven’t look back to any store bought options since.
With Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylate 7 mole EO, it lumps up if you add room temperature water to it. It is still possible to mix it with colder water to create the smooth gliding liquid that it should be, but it takes much longer and a lot more arm work. Using water around 50~60°C solves the problem. Stir and mix well - it’s as simple as that. No unnecessary fragrance or blue/green colorant - my kind of product.
My recipe is quite concentrated, so a little goes a long way. To use, I simply squirt less than a ¼ teaspoon into the rinse aid slot, and have my dishwasher on the lowest release setting. You can of course make a less concentrated batch.
